Postwar Young Reel with Aluminum Pfoot

Announcing New Products!

The "Old Young Pfoot" and The "New Young Pfoot"

After purchasing some Medalist One-Pfoot parts a few years ago, Ron McAlpin, known to many of you as "Bulldog", approached us about building a replacement foot for the J.W. Young line of reels. The difficulty, Ron explained, was that the feet on the J.W.Young reels did not fit some of the distinctive and diminutive slide band seats that were the mainstay of many of the early classic American bamboo rods. This problem was most apparent on the later postwar reels that most of us know as ending with "ex" in their name - the Pridex, the Condex, and the Beaudex, to name a few. Based on the samples that Ron sent us, we designed a foot with the more user friendly tapers and radii of the original One-Pfoot. According to Ron, the new foot worked.

We then went to work designing a foot for the older prewar J.W.Young reels. Here, as Ron explained, the problem was a little different. Many of the older prewar feet were much too long to fit on our modern day reel seats. The truncated reel foot that we came up with is just the remedy for the extra long prewar J.W.Young feet.

We have made both the "New Young Pfoot' and the "Old Young Pfoot" in a lightweight aluminum bar stock model, and, in a solid brass model for the more classic look.

"The New Young Pfoot"

The "New Young Pfoot" was especially designed to fit the more modern postwar J.W.Youngs. It will allow you to use your J.W. Young reel on the most delicate of slide band reel seats and the narrowest of screw lock seats.

The easiest way to tell if you need a "New Young Pfoot" for your reel is to carefully detach the existing foot that is on the reel. By looking at the foot where it mounts on the reel, observe whether it is flat or curved. If your reel foot has a flat surface then your reel will take a "New Young Pfoot"

Brass Old Young Pfoot

The "Old Young Pfeet" are the feet that were designed for use on those older classic, unmarked J.W.Youngs. Our pfoot has been shortened from the original long square ended foot that is most usually seen on the older Youngs. These new pfeet will easily allow you to convert your prewar classic Young reel so that it will fit the reel seats of yesteryear, and also, the reel seats of the present modern era.

Again, you can tell whether you need a "Old Young Pfoot" by carefully taking off the original foot that came on the reel and examining the where it mounts to the reel. If the original foot has a curved surface, then you will need to order the "Old Young Pfoot".
